Computers With No Internet Connection is NOT a Hoax

It seems as though for many individuals, there is a debate as to the validity of millions of computers losing access to the internet in July 2012.   It is always good to be reluctant on information which circulates on the internet, but it is important to note the FBI has control of their website and the press release issued last November concerning the shutdown of the “safety net” which was attempting to protect users is real.  The individuals they arrested for hacking into computers based on false advertisements is real.  And the potential to not have access to the internet, is also real.

My Fox Tampa Bay, a local news station, did a phenomenal job of summarizing what could potentially happen to computer users reliant on the internet.

Take a moment to view the story online.

Visit the official press release from the FBI.

Finally, visit one of the approved Federal Bureau of Investigation’s list of DNSChanger Check-Up sites to see if you were affected.  The list can be found here or below.

Maintainer English DNS Changer Working Group (DCWG) German Bundeskriminalamt (BKA)
Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) Finish CERT-Fi Swedish CERT-Fi Dutch/French French CERT-LEXSI English/French CIRA and CCIRC English CIRCL Dutch/English SIDN

No, not every user will be affected. However, it will not hurt, to check now, before you wake up to work on an important project and have no access to the internet.

Now, that could mess up a day for sure.
