Whatever Happened to “No Comment”?

Do you remember back in 2011 when Paris Hilton walked out of an interview?   More than likely not considering the question she was asked by an ABC News correspondent.  The question?  If she was worried about not being relevant any longer due to other rising reality tv stars (i.e. Kim Kardashian).  She did manage to return and finish the interview with a more polished and mature response. 

Fast forward to April 2012 with maybe a more relevant star, Rihanna, who decides to end an interview abruptly over being asked about her love life.  It was odd for many people as she typically is not one to hold back her thoughts, but perhaps she wasn’t up to the normal banter most celebrities keep handy for instances such as these.

Now let’s skip ahead to the May 3rd interview with Hollywood film actress, Megan Fox and Steve Jones.  Apparently her publicist informed Entertainment Tonight about Fox not discussing rumors of possibly being pregnant.  Of course Jones went in for the question in true ET fashion and Fox’s publicist jumped in and stopped the interview. 

Although the initial non-professional side thinks it is good to see some celebrities taking a stand for themselves and choosing to not live their entire life before the public, the Above Promotions Company side thinks, “why aren’t celebrities and their publicists discussing ways to respond to these topics?”

We’ve never been a fan of the “No comment” response, but surely instructing, approving or going along with the thought of just walking off or ending an interview where no one is physically being hurt or verbally abused would fall well below the “no comment” response in our book.  Even when an interview goes left, someone prepared can take it right.  (Tip: One should never overlook the time it takes the media to schedule and edit interviews.) 

We will more than likely never know the discussion which took place between these celebrities and their publicists prior to or after their interviews, so we can’t say they weren’t properly coached.  But we can offer up some advice to the business owner and entertainer currently seeking to expand their sales or fans. 

These interviews gone wrong are great examples of what not to do.  They are also examples of how important it is to look beyond just scheduling interviews and ensuring you are prepared for the public.  You can’t control the media, but you can control your response to them.  A wrong statement or gesture can cause your publicist or internal media department to switch from scheduling interviews to working on a crisis communication strategy.
