The War In Christmas Marketing

It goes without saying that commercialism of the holiday season is at an all time high. One needs no further proof of this than the REI Black Friday announcement, the TJ Maxx commercial on being closed on Thanksgiving or the Starbucks holiday cup discussion. From Twitter to CNN, everyone seems to have their own opinion on how businesses should handle the holidays and advertise to them.

The topic of the “War on Christmas” seems to be a hot button or easy media content to fuel discussion among the masses during these last few weeks of the year. However, it isn’t the War on Christmas brands and consumers should pay attention to, but it is the War in Christmas Marketing. The war is in what brand will be the most memorable and what emotions will they evoke. Who will rise to the top with the most sales? For this time of year, it is all out war for the mighty dollar. For the companies who have not focused on creativity, relevance and agility, they can expect to lose once again this holiday season.

I must say the way Dunkin’ Donuts joined the conversation on seasonal holiday cups was a boss move. It was the coup de grace to the other coffee industry giants. Whether it is decorations or advertisements, this is the season for marketing departments everywhere to pull out all of the stops. As we see, they are doing just that.

The great thing about marketing in today’s world is we now have the ability to be nimble with our efforts. The chance to take creativity and join it with relevant discussions from an agile stance. Technology through the internet and mobile phones allows brands to successfully reach consumers in minutes instead of days. Social media has given brands the ability to publish content whenever they see fit. Waiting for the annual catalog to drop or a host of commercials to run is no longer the primary thing for businesses. A simple text message on sales and people are immediately taken online to shop. And in war, being quick to strike helps to gain small or large victories. These catalogs and commercials help and of course have not gone anywhere, but when you have Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Android systems, you can obtain feedback sooner and tweak messaging at a faster rate now (i.e. newsjack).

Brands like Dunkin’ Donuts have proven they are not afraid to get into the conversation. The War on Christmas was not going to be a missed opportunity for them to experience an easy win in the War in Christmas Marketing. (Truly Starbucks should have predicted this one based on the #AllDayBreakfast promotion McDonald’s ran in October which I mentioned in the “How to Hijack a Hashtag Like a Boss” post.) Besides, why not take advantage of a topic occurring in your industry about a competitor? It is very difficult to cut through all of the holiday noise and stand out. One must grab the media’s attention while they can, right? A cup of Joy fit into the conversation perfectly and a victory in the war was attained.

There are only so many ways to make a toy store stand out against a big box store. There are only so many ways to make sweaters stand out from brand to brand. This War in Christmas Marketing calls for creating great content, but taking strategic steps to stand out at the right moments. The road map to holiday victory comes with successes, just barely getting by and massive explosions (crises) which injures brands. However, with a dynamic strategy, brands can still win.

The War in Christmas Marketing is not taken lightly for the retail industry. Black Friday and Cyber Monday may help set the pace for the remaining weeks.

How Technology Changed Our Marketing Efforts

Technology has changed marketing. Above Promotions Company. Digital Marketing and Public Relations. Tampa FL.

The evolution of technology has definitely been an endless one. Over the years we have seen advancements in every industry imaginable due to the newest ideas, gadgets, apps, and the list goes on. The marketing industry has definitely benefited from the numerous technological advancements. With the new strides that social media applications have been taking, the marketing industry has been able take off in a new direction. Now more than ever we see successful brands and marketing professionals directing their attention and efforts towards popular social media websites as a way to directly reach the masses and control the messaging. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are only a few; the list is constantly growing with new platforms vying at a chance to get a piece of the advertising pie. Taking a closer look at popular media trends, we see how much of an impact they’ve made on brand recognition.

Here are three trends you cannot ignore if you want your brand to be successful thanks to technology.

  1. Vine and Instagram seemed to have knocked down the most doors when it comes to successful advertising attempts. The both of these methods have a very short, straight to the point method about them which makes it easier for viewers to get stuck into viewing hundreds of Vine videos and Instragram posts for hours at a time. Why wouldn’t marketers jump on this opportunity? While numerous brands have established themselves on Instagram already, only a few brands such as Trident, Samsung, Oreos, and Dunkin Donuts have been successful with creatively marketing themselves through the six-second Vine videos. Dunkin Donuts did a great job with their re-enactment of a NFL play, gaining lots of attention from viewers.
  2. dos equis above promotions company pr digital marketing tampa fl Memes have also had a creative impact on marketing strategies. Memes have sparked wildfires across social media outlets and have ultimately become a source of entertainment. Great memes are very quick to the point, humorous, and easily sharable. These each serve as a major plus in the mind of a marketer. A great example of a meme that took the internet by storm is Dos Equis with “the most interesting man in the world”. After the launching of their commercials and website many users took to re-creating the image of Jonathan Goldsmith with their own messages. This indeed helped the brand gain widespread recognition because regardless of the message, the man pictured was undoubtedly associated with Dos Equis.
  3. Live videos have been around for a while now thanks to YouTube, but users are now looking to YouTube for reasons other than entertainment. YouTube has now become a way for small business owners to market their products through live demonstrations. In return, users are conducting their own reviews of the products giving the brand more recognition and new consumers. Small business owners within the hair industry have greatly benefited from these simple to produce YouTube videos as many women continue to search for that perfect hair product.

These three trends have changed marketing strategies greatly. Businesses are constantly being challenged to attempt to keep up with the fast paced social media world that technology has brought about. Instagram/Vine videos, live videos, and memes are only a few of the major successes. Within the blink of an eye, more and more advancements are arising. As a business owner or brand manager, it is imperative that you remain up to date with the newest technological advancements to stay ahead of the game with all marketing efforts to keep your brand in peoples’ mouths. It is indeed a constant race we are running to stay on top of the game.

Don’t Give Up on Blogging

As society continues to move towards becoming relying on digital things and spend more time online, it is becoming easier for brands to go straight to the public. One of the most popular ways of sharing today is through blogs. Blogs have become a sort of modern newspaper. You have the chance to control your message and have it circulated amongst customers, colleagues, or employees via social media sites. While blogging is convenient, it is a task many dread and often falls by the wayside. Here are some tips to make your blog the most successful it can be and keep you motivated to share content. 1) Be consistent The first tip to having a successful blog is consistency. Consistency will help to attract followers. If readers know that you update your blog every Wednesday at noon, it is something they will expect every Wednesday at noon. Rather than posting every once in a while, when no one is really sure when to check the blog for another post, be consistent. Besides helping with followers, consistency will also help you with staying up-to-date on industry topics and sparks creativity for new projects. Eventually it will become routine, and the feeling that you want to give up on it won’t come as much. In the beginning, it may seem a bit annoying not knowing if anyone is reading, and sometimes you may not know quite what to write about. However, this is why coming up with an editorial calendar that is in line with the marketing plan for your brand is vital. This may be difficult at first, but the more you keep going the easier it gets. 2) Be Brief As many people know, the attention span of humans just is not what it used to be. Specifically, when it comes to the internet, people want information fast. One of the biggest social media platforms, Twitter, limits subscribers to only 140 characters per tweet. Work to create your brand’s blogs where the reader doesn’t have to go to page 4 to get the point of why the post was even written. This concept applies for those going the video blog route as well. Keep it brief by just giving the vital information. In other words, quickly get to the point. 3) Find your brand’s voice This is a very important tip for when you’re writing a blog. The voice is important when thinking about how you want your readers to perceive your brand. If your blog is more serious, and you’re doing things like giving people financial or medical advice a serious, a professional voice will give you more credibility. However, when writing for a more creative or youthful audience, your “official press voice” is not necessary. You have to write for your audience. While it is not easy maintaining a blog and getting into a rut will happen on occasion, if you stick to these three tips, you will find your followers will increase and your content become one that people do not want to live without.
