The holiday season has arrived and many of you may have plans to run specials to attempt to increase sales. While the entire retail industry will be running numerous specials, very few will manage to stand out from the rest.

Here is our number one marketing tip for the holidays this year!

Number Your Holiday Specials!

You may be wondering what this means. So here is an example to help explain the concept.

ABC Company is running weekly specials for the Christmas holiday. Instead of ABC Company simply listing a new special each week appearing random in nature, ABC Company should add a number to their advertisements to help display a well thought out concept, create a sense of urgency, to remind people there is a limited time to the specials and their business has offerings to keep in mind for Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas or New Year’s.

For example, “5 Weeks of deals to help fulfill your gift list with X from ABC Company”, “25 Days of Christmas specials to make your shopping jolly” or “10 Ways to Make Her Smile this Christmas.”

You chose the special which will help you to receive the biggest return this season. As I’ve mentioned it previously, use numbers to trigger mental notes for the memory of your customers.

What specials are you running for the holidays? Will you be incorporating some number to help people remember your steals and deals for their shopping list?

Comment below and your answer may appear in a future blog post or an update to this one.

There is so much to explore in the news lately. Over the next week or so, I’ll be breaking down each of these topics to discuss from a branding and crisis communication view-point. For publicists and marketing experts that write for the public, the news right now is like Christmas in July, except in November for us. The banquet table for “why did they do that” or “what were they thinking” has literally filled our lives.

Here’s a quick synopsis of what we’ll be discussing in the upcoming days with maybe a couple of pauses to allow a few other topics to appear.

– The unfolding investigation that is in the forefront of international news. Extramarital affairs, inappropriate emails and the women involved in this story is certainly buzz worthy. As the news continues to unfold in the General Petraeus and General Allen scancal, this crisis will be under a strong review.

– An inappropriate relationship between the creator of Elmo, Kevin Clash and a male accuser. Many disappointed fans and a hiatus from the show. What will this mean for the brand and its Christmas sales?

– What do the petitions to secede from the United States mean in the public eye to those in other countries or even to the youth? We’ll dive into this more as well.

– John Schnatter, the CEO of Papa John’s International, has stirred up the sauce with his statements over increasing pizza prices and firing employees. Be prepared as we slice up his statements.

Intrigued yet? Certainly we’ll have much to discuss on these topics in the upcoming days. Stay tuned and feel free to share your comments below on any of the topics. Your comments may be used for the upcoming posts.

Happy Retailer’s Day!

Today is Valentine’s Day.  Or is it?  At least that’s what the calendar says.

Whether you celebrate the day or not we know for many it’s a day of constant reminders of love being shown through thoughtful or last minute gifts.  This year you may feel like everywhere you turn today is another reminder of the “holiday for lovers”.  Constant hearts being thrown in your face and you wonder if this year there are even more.  Please don’t think you’re going crazy.  You’re not!  There are more hearts everywhere.   And with the information we will share below, you’ll understand why we now call today, Happy Retailer’s Day!

According to the National Retailers Federation, their 2012 Valentine’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, revealed that today alone will yield a very nice return for businesses since the Christmas holiday season.  The average person celebrating the holiday will shell out $126.03, which is up 8.5 percent over last year and the highest in the survey’s 10-year history.  The spending for today is expected to reach $17.6 billion!*

From spouses to domestic relationships, family members and friends, the average dollar amount each will spend has increased.  And don’t think that the animals have been forgotten.  The average person will spend about $4.52 on their pets.

Now with this in mind, we do hope our retail followers are fully prepared for online sales and their websites are tablet and smartphone friendly.  The same survey states, “more than half of all tablet owners (53.8%) will use their device to research products, compare prices, redeem coupons, look up retailer information or purchase products. Four in 10 (40.4%) smartphone owners will use their mobile device to do the same.”

So no.  You’re not going crazy.  Businesses have positioned themselves to rake in some of the billions expected to flow in our economy today.  Just hold tight a few more hours and this will all be over.

If you are a business owner and can admit you weren’t ready for today, don’t worry.  Above Promotions Company is available to tell you how to unload some of your Valentine’s products and supplies.

Happy Retailer’s Day!
