The End of an Era

Alas, after 11 judges, 13 years, 14 seasons, and 533 episodes the American Idol era has come to an end, but what’s been left behind is now a legacy. With some of the highest ratings on television Fox went on to create eight different American Idol spin-offs, an attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and influenced the start of many other singing competition shows, still going strong today. So, this begs the question: why end it?

The high ratings they once had were no longer there. The audience for American Idol had left. The ratings coming in the past few years were numbers expected for scripted once a week shows. However, this wouldn’t cut it for the money that’s put into such a production. Fox knew that its product was no longer in demand and did the smart thing.

In building your brand, you may find that a product does really well and becomes really high in demand, but then one day it isn’t anymore. What your brand does next is critical. There is the option to try and find a way to make the product better, and find out what is making the product a non-essential. If you come up empty be sure you’re not losing more than you’re making. If this is true for your brand start thinking of new ideas.

In Fox’s case with American Idol by the time their ratings started dropping the revised, better versions of their show were already out there like The Voice and America’s Got Talent.Almost every network has their own American Idol with a twist. The demand was no longer there. Despite losing what once were their two biggest shows last season (American Idol and Glee) Fox is looking forward with their fall schedule with shows Empire, who had record high ratings in their first season alone. With these new shows I have no doubt Fox will be back on top of the rating game in no time.

How Technology Changed Our Marketing Efforts

The evolution of technology has definitely been an endless one. Over the years we have seen advancements in every industry imaginable due to the newest ideas, gadgets, apps, and the list goes on. The marketing industry has definitely benefited from the numerous technological advancements. With the new strides that social media applications have been taking, the marketing industry has been able take off in a new direction. Now more than ever we see successful brands and marketing professionals directing their attention and efforts towards popular social media websites as a way to directly reach the masses and control the messaging. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are only a few; the list is constantly growing with new platforms vying at a chance to get a piece of the advertising pie. Taking a closer look at popular media trends, we see how much of an impact they’ve made on brand recognition.

Here are three trends you cannot ignore if you want your brand to be successful thanks to technology.

  1. Vine and Instagram seemed to have knocked down the most doors when it comes to successful advertising attempts. The both of these methods have a very short, straight to the point method about them which makes it easier for viewers to get stuck into viewing hundreds of Vine videos and Instragram posts for hours at a time. Why wouldn’t marketers jump on this opportunity? While numerous brands have established themselves on Instagram already, only a few brands such as Trident, Samsung, Oreos, and Dunkin Donuts have been successful with creatively marketing themselves through the six-second Vine videos. Dunkin Donuts did a great job with their re-enactment of a NFL play, gaining lots of attention from viewers.
  2. dos equis above promotions company pr digital marketing tampa fl Memes have also had a creative impact on marketing strategies. Memes have sparked wildfires across social media outlets and have ultimately become a source of entertainment. Great memes are very quick to the point, humorous, and easily sharable. These each serve as a major plus in the mind of a marketer. A great example of a meme that took the internet by storm is Dos Equis with “the most interesting man in the world”. After the launching of their commercials and website many users took to re-creating the image of Jonathan Goldsmith with their own messages. This indeed helped the brand gain widespread recognition because regardless of the message, the man pictured was undoubtedly associated with Dos Equis.
  3. Live videos have been around for a while now thanks to YouTube, but users are now looking to YouTube for reasons other than entertainment. YouTube has now become a way for small business owners to market their products through live demonstrations. In return, users are conducting their own reviews of the products giving the brand more recognition and new consumers. Small business owners within the hair industry have greatly benefited from these simple to produce YouTube videos as many women continue to search for that perfect hair product.

These three trends have changed marketing strategies greatly. Businesses are constantly being challenged to attempt to keep up with the fast paced social media world that technology has brought about. Instagram/Vine videos, live videos, and memes are only a few of the major successes. Within the blink of an eye, more and more advancements are arising. As a business owner or brand manager, it is imperative that you remain up to date with the newest technological advancements to stay ahead of the game with all marketing efforts to keep your brand in peoples’ mouths. It is indeed a constant race we are running to stay on top of the game.

Have you started incorporating these tools into your campaigns? How effective have they been?

3 Tips to Keep Your Business Hot in the Winter

Surviving the winter months is a concern for many businesses. Consumer spending shifts to the holidays and the amount being spent greatly declines after the rush to spend on gifts goes away. So the average business owner plans for the rush and hopes to receive a portion of the billions of dollars spent during this time of year.

However, for businesses that sell items which are best enjoyed in the spring and summer months, the excessive spending and recovery period is not felt. The winter months isn’t about a large boost in sales, but a steady decline in revenue because consumers tend to focus less on the sunny days and be more concerned about the ice-cold ones.

We recently received a request for consulting for a business who specializes in summer/beach items. The company had read our blog post, “Our Number One Marketing Tip for the Holiday Season” but they still needed campaign ideas for their product. And while, I simply cannot list all ideas in this one article, there are three things you should keep in mind when planning for the winter months (and not just Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays).

  1. Work with what you got. Here in Florida there is a plethora of stores on the beach which sell beach wear items. If you sell clothing items which are more apt for the spring and summer months, consider working with a fashion stylist to help you keep the desire for your items going in the winter months. Fashion stylists, similar to Tamy Lugo of vStylist, have a way of showing customers how to transition their pieces for the cooler months. So the tank top with the sun on it is now being focused as a cami under a sweater or a jacket. There are ways to sell most summer clothing items in the winter. You just need to team up with a professional to show you how.
  2. Get in where you can fit in. Create or purchase temporary products. I believe there is one national store which does this idea the best, Tropical Smoothie Cafe. This store is literally a hot spot for smoothies in the north and the south. They do not stop selling the icy treats once the winter months roll around. Nope. They focus on inserting white chocolate into some drinks and cranberries into others. And for their customers who refuse to drink the smoothies while the temperatures are below cool, they create seasonal sandwiches, soups and salads which have the same seasonal spirit of the weather.
  3. Embrace the winter months. Imagine having a paintball business located outdoors in states where snow is a part of the norm. Many people would only think to visit this business in the warmer months. However, this type of business can encourage those who like this outdoor activity to participate in various themed days. There are people who can relate to the Star Wars movie where Luke Skywalker was in the snow fighting the Imperials. Why not create time periods where people can embrace pop culture memories while playing outdoors? Why reduce your hours or close your fields because people are not able to relate to the cold and outdoors? You can even purchase snow themed courses. Give these outdoor sportsmen something to embrace instead of closing.

This article could go on and on listing examples from our team members for companies who may scuba dive or outdoor bars, but with these three examples, your mind is probably turning now on how to embrace these winter months.

So what did you think of these examples? Do you have good examples of other businesses that are keeping their sales hot in the winter? Reply below. Your responses could be used for a future article.
