Partnering in Business is the Bee’s Knees

This morning I had a chance to speak with a good client and friend. As we discussed each other’s business goals for the coming months, it became clear to me that I have an excellent pool and resource of people to discuss the topics with that I couldn’t do so with others. In this pool is a great bond of striving towards success by any positive avenues necessary. Don’t get me wrong family and friends not in business are great supporters. My mom who is one of my best friends, number one supporter and who can have intelligent conversations with the best of them, doesn’t quite relate to me completely on business topics. There are some things that only other business owners can fully feel.

In my book, Because You’re Small: Effective Marketing Strategies for Immediate Implementation, I discuss the benefits of partnering with other businesses or organizations. However, today I’d like to share a more basic and emotional reason for it that I want those of you have may be fighting teaming up with others to grasp. Having fellow business owners and non-profit leaders as partners really is the bee’s knees. (I love that old saying.)

There is a bond that is formed when you and someone else who is in the trenches both share – the goal of business expansion. A dear friend of mines and I share tips with each other all of the time. If I make a mistake in a social media post, she sends me a quick note. If I see she could use other colors on a graphic she has designed, she gladly accepts my advice. She and I, along with myself and others, have a common ground. We all desire to expand our businesses and help each other along the way. Due to this common ground, none of us think twice about including the other in promotions or events that can benefit the other’s business. Because of this, we’ve all been able to see new leads come our way because of our willingness to partner with and support one another.

This may be difficult for those who have been burnt in the past over these types of relationships, but just like every chair will not break when you sit in it, not every business relationship will break either. And like I mention in the book, you do have to do some due diligence and you more than likely do not want to share confidential trade information with others, but if you keep these things in mind and go into a business relationship with good motives, it can work for you. The support in helping to generate each other new business is there if you would only be open to partnering with others.

I have seen people who can barely get people to attend events or patronize their business go to more than enough customers by simply opening themselves up to new relationships with other business owners. Yes, partnering brings great camaraderie, but it also brings great business.

Today’s post is not the typical in your face marketing advice you normally get, but if you digest this topic carefully, you will see all of the co-branding and cross promotional opportunities that you can get by simply partnering with others.

Top 10 Social Media Posts for 2012

There are more and more consultants targeting businesses to contract out their social media services. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve noticed a large number of these “social media” marketing companies violating terms of use for Facebook and Twitter. Of course to those who do not know some of the basics, you could find yourself paying a “consultant” to have your account deactivated or suspended.

It’s important you work with someone knowledgeable in the field. But how can you know if the person you’re speaking to is up-to-date on the rules? To have some comfort with the company you are working with, you will need to know a few things yourself.

Over 2012, I’ve shared some important information to help business owners and non-profit leaders get a handle on social media as well as staying out of trouble. Feel free to visit what I believe are the top 10 posts on the topic as well as the Infographic below to keep in your arsenal.
