Images and friends can truly take their social connection and interests to the next level with the introduction of Facebook’s Graph Search. It’s the chance to group friends of like interests through a search. You can skip having to post as a status, “Anyone gone to XYZ restaurant yet?” As an avid user of Yelp when looking for new places, wow if this doesn’t provide for the possibility of me staying on Facebook to find feedback. Of course as with any change to Facebook, you should be concerned with the level of privacy on your personal accounts. In fact this would be a good time to review some of your older pictures, pages you have liked and even places you’ve checked in to. If you’re concerned about a few people who may be too interested in your activities, you may want to consider deleting them or preventing them from seeing certain things. (Do not take your privacy lightly concerning Graph Search. Read this post by Gizmodo.)

While I, like other marketers, wait to be granted access for the beta testing, there are two things for sure that none of us who manage brand pages have to wait for – improving the customer experience and images used for branding.

Every single organization with a brand page needs to immediately think about how good and bad experiences will affect your business. People will be able to easily see informal reviews and pictures of your place within their group of friends.  So honesty in advertising and word of mouth has just been amplified. You will need to focus on if you are really delivering the pleasant experience you have been sharing through your marketing efforts. This update is as though Yelp just entered Facebook. Like TripAdvisor just sat down with your potential customers. As though the Better Business Bureau just advertised any complaints. Partial statements about an experience with your business just took front stage and you must do what you can to make sure the audience applauds.

As for the images uploaded on your page, just how great are they? Or how many are original to your brand? It’s easy to take the economic or lazy way out and solely snap pictures from your camera phone and upload to your page. Perhaps a couple of pictures in low lighting may be acceptable every now then to represent a live occurrence, but that cannot be your only source for representing your product(s). Adding images that are not related to your services may just be helping out someone else more than yourself.

Look at it from this angle. Once Graph Search rolls out, when your images are grouped with ones from camera phones from users, how will you stand out? Will your images be compelling enough to get the user to click on the image and visit your page and purchase from you? I mean that is the end goal of using any social media platform, right? To entice a sale. This isn’t to negate the fact that some things will look ok from a high quality camera phones, but this is to say that you should consider using a professional grade camera or a photographer to properly represent your products. Treating your social media page as some impromptu dumping ground of information and images should cease sooner than later.

Oh Graph Search. It sounds as though you’re going to challenge the small businesses to look big. It seems as though you’re going to make everyone focus on quality service. This could wreak havoc on the lazy business owner or social media managers. One place for people to find out from their trusted peers where to go and where to run like crazy from in the opposite direction. Oh Graph Search, you may definitely be the enemy of doing “just enough”.

What do you think? Are you ready for Graph Search? Are there other things to consider now before its release?

Bad for Business: Outdated Pricing Online

If you follow this blog or our social media pages, you know that the book, “Because You’re Small: Effective Marketing Strategies for Immediate Implementation” will be released in major bookstores online on 10/11/12. The book not only has ways to help your business or non-profit today, but it addresses removing excuses for not providing or doing the basics in business “because you’re small.” Today’s topic is one of the basics business owners cannot afford to get wrong.

Recently, I was looking online in the Tampa Bay area for security alarm installation companies for automobiles. After conducting a few searches on Google, Yelp and even Facebook, I ended up with several tabs open in my internet browser so I could begin my research. As I went from site-to-site, I noticed many had prices listed on them, yet the website had not been updated in over a year. This made me realize that this process would be a long one. Not only would I be reviewing the businesses for location, service, expertise and price, but if they’re organized. Appearances are everything in business and people can determine these five things just by looking on your website.

In the end I was able to locate a business to install a new system, but along the way this whole pricing issue concerned me. I wanted to gauge the sentiments of other small business owners so I turned to my fellow Localshops1.com business members. I posed the following questions:

  • Do you include prices on your website?
  • If so, how often do you update it?
  • If a potential customer calls regarding your pricing on the site and it has changed, how do you inform them of this or do you honor the pricing?

Here are a few of the responses:

“On the e-commerce portion of our site for retail products we list pricing but on the service portion we do not list pricing. Too many variables when it comes to service, installation, maintenance, etc. As far as the pricing on the e-commerce, I update whenever we get pricing updates from our suppliers. Now on the flip side of that, if I have not updated and we had a price increase I would eat the increase and honor the web price, even though our site info page states prices are subject to change, etc, etc. Looks like bait and switch when you advertise one price.” – Lisa Burns, Ponds by the Backyard Getaway.

“We list prices on our website. If prices went up and we forgot to update, we would definitely honor the price listed.” – Ester Venouziou, Localshops1.com

During the discussion, I also mentioned that after speaking to a couple of alarm businesses that day, I leaned away from those who had not updated their prices, even if the difference was nominal. Perhaps it is the marketing professional in me, but to not maintain items customers see, means there are other items unseen not being maintained. However, perhaps this isn’t the feeling of the public as I received a different response from Terry Foster of the Yellow House Event Venue. She stated, “No have not done that…Moved on because their prices had not been updated…not a turn off for me. Many business owners rely on their website person to do the updates and we all know how that goes sometimes…but no it would not discourage me if I really wanted the item.”

As mentioned above, image is everything and the appearance of bait and switch leaves a bad taste in the eyes of many consumers.

Although this topic of pricing may seem as though it is a small marketing issue (experts are cringing at using the word “small”) that could be easily corrected, depending on what state or country you reside in, the item or how your business handles not honoring the price, you may find yourself in legal hot water. Since each area has its own laws, I encourage you to be sure you are familiar with the consumer protection laws in your state. The laws can be lengthy and seem outdated, but they are still the terms used to govern your business. (And you thought you wouldn’t need a lawyer for your business, right?)

Bottom line is that you could be legally held to honor the pricing on top of facing public scrutiny and embarrassment if you choose not to provide a posted price to a customer. In the least you can assume someone will turn to social media to bad mouth you.

So how do you feel now about posting prices on your site? Ready to stay on top of updating your webpage now?

Would love to hear your thoughts on today’s post. They may be used for a future article.

Politics and Business: Is it Worth It?

For many business owners, the opportunity to be featured in national news is one to jump on. But what if that opportunity involved a political official or candidate? Would you still take the chance of gaining more exposure for your business?

Scott Van Duzer, a registered Republican who voted for President Barack Obama in 2008, welcomed the Commander-in-Chief on Sunday, September 9th to his pizza restaurant in Ft. Pierce, FL. In an impromptu moment, Van Duzer in all of his 6 foot 3 inch glory, decided to bear hug President Obama. It would be hard pressed to remember a hug seen around the country like this one. It made the national news, while making those opposed to the president upset.

Since this bear hug was made public, Van Duzer has seen negative responses and even bad Yelp.com reviews over the gesture.

Now you may not be as excited or as strong as Van Duzer to see the U.S. President or any political figure come to your establishment as much as this owner was on Sunday, but would you even welcome such a parade of fan fare if given the chance?

Is it worth putting your business in the middle of politics for media exposure? Tell us your thoughts?
